About
WEDDING AND PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHERABOUT ME I photographed my first official paid portrait subject in East Falls Church, Virginia in the spring of 1987. In the cool evening breeze, I could have sworn that my subject, a talented funk/jazz musician named Michael Highsmith, could hear my knees clanking against one another as I struggled to compose myself and take the first shot. I wondered what I had gotten myself into, and whether I should just confess the fact that I had just purchased the camera a couple of weeks prior and hadn’t quite figured out how the thing worked. In any event it was too late. I was there! In the moment! Nowhere to run, and with a cover photo to deliver. I met Michael a year later at a music conference. The photo shoot long since erased from my mind, I was startled to see him heading hastily in my direction. He raised a hand for what I was sure was to be a painful encounter, but was relieved to see the other one reach around to form a tight bear hug around me. Seconds later, he pulled an object out from his backpack, and shoved it firmly in my hands. I looked down at it and there, to my delight, was a cassette tape with the picture that I had taken displayed on the cover. It looked wonderful! He was proud of it, and I was as well. It appeared that way back in that moment of uncertainty and unfamiliarity, I had managed through gut instinct to compose a shot that brought out the true essence of who this gentleman was. I had helped to tell a human story with the use of my camera. Through rigorous apprenticeships, formal study and constant practice, I’ve gotten a lot better since then. I’ve told many stories through the lenses of an assortment of professional cameras I’ve owned, and met and bonded with many colorful personalities through the years. It still brings me joy to look through the viewfinder and capture on film a moment suspended in time that reveals the truth and beauty engrained within a scene. I hope to continue doing this for many more years, and bring smiles of joy to all the clients I have the pleasure of working with. Thanks for reading.
